Nantucket

Nantucket is an American island located in the Atlantic Ocean, south of the Cape Cod peninsula. In the mid-18th century, it experienced significant economic growth thanks to whaling. It shares this past with Biarritz, which was also an important whaling centre. Practised by the Basques since the 12th century, the Biarrots were considered the most skilled in this field until the practice ended in the 19th century. The sea was scanned by lookouts posted on the heights of the coastline and charged with ringing a bell when whales passed by, particularly in Biarritz, from the Atalaye promontory.

Symbol

You will find a magnificent Napoleon III desk and two paintings by Quentin Monges.

Art

This room evokes the importance of whales to Biarritz with bas-relief wallpaper by the artist Été 1981 and several 19th-century engravings. Located at the top of the house with a magnificent view of the ocean, it is like an observatory for these giant cetaceans.
