Ardiak & Manech

The Basque Country hides two other lesser-known treasures: the Pottok and the Manech black-headed sheep. These are two breeds of pony and sheep typical of the region. Of very ancient origin, the Pottok was used for centuries by the inhabitants of the Basque Country for various agricultural and mining tasks. Today, these magnificent animals can be found in the wild in the mountains. The Manech Tête Noire is a breed of sheep native to the mountains of the Basque Country. The ewes are raised for their milk, which is used to make Ossau-Iraty cheese.

Symbol

It is a horned sheep with white wool and a black head and legs. The Manech and Ardiak rooms (sheep in Basque) illustrate this magnificent animal using a collection of customised cement tiles created by Atelier Volant.
