In 1855, Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie had a palace built in Biarritz and spent their summers there, bringing with them all of Europe's royalty, businessmen and society women.
To satisfy them, the entire world of luxury and fashion set up shop in Biarritz. Chanel, Guerlain and Hermès opened their first boutiques.
Other big names in haute couture (Jeanne Lanvin, Jean Patou, Worth, Courrèges and Balenciaga) also came to Biarritz to satisfy these women, who changed outfits up to three times a day and attended parties every evening.
