The Smugglers

In the 18th century, taxes were so high that smuggling between Spain and France became widespread. A wide variety of goods crossed the border unnoticed by customs officers, including wine, tobacco, sugar, coffee, chocolate, horses and livestock. Smuggling by land was fraught with all kinds of dangers. The smugglers' gangs (around ten men aged around 25), who knew every inch of the terrain, travelled under cover of darkness, covering great distances along the most difficult mountain paths, with bundles on their shoulders.

Art

A magnificent painting by Pablo Elizaga illustrates the story of these men who left their mark on the history of the Basque Country.
